On Thursday evening, the Federal Communications Commission voted to approve Paramount’s $8.4 billion merger with fellow entertainment firm Skydance Media. The controversial, long-awaited deal only came about thanks to Paramount’s appeals to this administration: settling a baseless lawsuit that Trump brought against 60 Minutes for “deceptively” editing its Kamala Harris interview, pressuring subsidiary CBS News to shift its “balance” in a right-wing direction, and canceling presidential foe and beloved comedian Stephen Colbert’s highly rated late-night talk show.

Skydance is owned by Ellison’s son, David, who personally met with both Trump and FCC Chair Brendan Carr to get the deal done. The elder Ellison is covering most of the cash to close the Skydance-Paramount merger, which will give him significant control over the new company and a chance to carry out, as he detailed in federal filings, a wholesale transformation of CBS in his vision—including broadcasts of complimentary PSAs for Trump administration initiatives.

When Carr announced the merger approval, he positively affirmed “Skydance’s commitment to make significant changes at the once storied CBS broadcast network,” including the impending hire of an “ombudsman” who’ll monitor CBS News broadcasts for “bias” as the overall company slashes its diversity, equity, and inclusion guidelines. Said Trump himself of his “friend” Larry Ellison: “I think he’s going to run CBS really well, and I think he’s making a good deal to buy it.”

Through this brazenly corrupt arrangement, the U.S. president has granted one of his pals uninhibited control over a longtime bastion of mainstream, fact-based news, which he openly intends to bend toward his conservative vision. And that’s just one of the ways Trump is helping Larry Ellison become the most powerful and not-so-secretly influential tech mogul in the country.

Oracle, which Larry still runs as chief technology officer and board chairman, is also in talks with David Ellison’s Skydance for a major deal that would see the latter pay the former $100 million a year to run all of Paramount’s tech through Oracle’s valuable cloud-computing software. Skydance already pays Oracle $2.2 million a year for its cloud and platform products, and the FCC explicitly signed off on David Ellison’s plan to run all of Paramount’s and Skydance’s software on the same cloud tech, which will be provided by Oracle.

Once a wonky telecom regulator that mostly avoided politics, the FCC is now at the leading edge of President Donald Trump’s crusade to turn the federal government into an instrument of his own will.

Since January, Trump’s FCC chief Brendan Carr has weaponized the agency to intimidate news organizations and media companies by threatening their broadcast licenses and launching sham investigations into their business practices and diversity programs. Carr is also racing to roll back FCC regulations, eliminate consumer protections, and unleash further media consolidation. Last week, the Senate confirmed former GOP congressional staffer Olivia Trusty to the agency, giving Carr the majority he needs to forge full-steam ahead with his MAGA agenda.

Free speech advocates call Carr’s actions a blatant violation of the First Amendment and federal law, and an egregious and unprecedented abuse of the agency’s power. A bipartisan group of former FCC commissioners recently accused Carr of turning the agency into the “White House’s personal censor.” In addition to cracking down on disfavored speech, the agency has already begun offering favors like merger approvals to media companies in exchange for their loyalty to the president.

“This is the most corrupt FCC in the agency’s history,” Victor Pickard, a professor of media policy at the University of Pennsylvania, told The Nation. “What we’re seeing now is outright Mafia-style behavior where the FCC is trying to shake down corporations and entire industries to carry out Trump’s agenda.”

Carr has threatened Comcast, which owns MSNBC, with the loss of its broadcast licenses because Trump was offended by the network’s coverage of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man the administration admits was mistakenly sent to a prison in El Salvador. And he’s launched an investigation into CBS after Trump repeatedly called for the cancellation of the network’s broadcast licenses and demanded that the FCC impose “maximum fines and punishment” over a disputed 60 Minutes broadcast.

“The idea that we would revoke a broadcast license based on editorial decisions is antithetical to the First Amendment,” Anna M. Gomez, the FCC’s lone Democratic commissioner, told The Nation. “We need the FCC to honor the Constitution, to comply with the Communications Act prohibition against censorship, and to stand up to these types of attempts to weaponize the agency in order to retaliate against broadcasters.”

It’s quite a turnabout for Carr, who in 2021 declared that “a newsroom’s decision about what stories to cover and how to frame them should be beyond the reach of any government official, not targeted by them.”

For nearly a century, the FCC operated mostly outside the realm of politics, regulating the nation’s airwaves, licensing TV and radio stations, and promoting competition and diversity across the media landscape. Although FCC commissioners are nominated by the president, Congress designed the agency to act independently from White House influence, and for the most part, FCC chiefs treated that independence as essential to ensuring free speech and diversity over the nation’s airwaves.

Trump and Carr’s complete disregard for that principle is evident in their campaign of coercion against 60 Minutes, which has infuriated the president with its critical coverage of his hostility to Ukraine and imperial ambitions for Greenland. In an apparent attempt to bolster Trump’s bogus $20 billion lawsuit over last summer’s disputed Kamala Harris segment, Carr launched a “news distortion” investigation into CBS and has slow-walked approval of its parent company Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media. Paramount, in turn, has reportedly begun influencing 60 Minutes news coverage, leading to the resignation of two senior executives.

Carr, who has recently taken to wearing a gold Trump-head lapel pin, is also doing his part as a loyal MAGA minion by pressuring media giants like Comcast and Disney to join Trump’s anti-diversity crusade and abandon their DEI hiring policies. He’s threatened to block merger proposals from companies that fail to do so. In an abject display of corporate capitulation, Verizon dutifully obliged in order to win approval of its $20 billion buyout of Frontier Communications.

The Trump FCC’s assault on the First Amendment has been so shocking that it has diverted attention from Carr’s extreme pro-business, anti-consumer agenda. In April, Carr launched what he called a “massive deregulatory initiative” that public interest group Free Press described as “a brazen attempt to roll back consumer safeguards on a widespread scale for industry’s convenience.” The pro-consumer FCC policies on the chopping block amount to a big-business wish list that includes eliminating broadband label and truth-in-billing requirements, rolling back restrictions on scam robocalls and texts, and watering down digital discrimination rules that encourage equitable broadband deployment.

Given Trump’s illegal firing of two Democratic commissioners at the FTC, public interest advocates warn that Trump could fire Gomez, the remaining Democratic FCC commissioner, while elevating recently departed GOP commissioner Nathan Simington’s former chief of staff, 31-year-old MAGA ideologue Gavin Wax, who once declared that Trump’s reelection would be a “time for retribution.”

Wax would fit right in. If President Trump behaves like a Mafia boss, then Carr is acting like a MAGA enforcer, threatening Trump’s media enemies while doling out favors for corporate interests with little regard for the collateral damage done to the rule of law or the public interest. It’s a familiar Trump formula: weaponize the federal government to punish criticism, reward obedience—and screw the American public”.

“Behavior that gets rewarded gets repeated,” the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression said Wednesday. “This settlement will only embolden the president to continue his flurry of baseless lawsuits against the press — and against the American people’s ability to hear the news free from government intrusion.”

A ‘monument to Paramount’s surrender’

According to the terms of the settlement, which were announced late Tuesday night, Trump will drop the suit in exchange for $16 million toward his presidential library. The financial terms mirror the deal that Disney’s ABC struck with Trump last December.

“Trump’s presidential library will be a permanent monument to Paramount’s surrender,” remarked Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.

Other press freedom advocates called the CBS parent’s decision a “spineless” and “shameful” capitulation.

Veteran media reporter Paul Farhi said on X that it was “fascinating how Paramount has borne the bulk of the criticism for agreeing to this payoff. As if Trump is a passive bystander who played no role.”

The conservative editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, controlled by Rupert Murdoch, focused on Trump’s conduct in a sharply critical piece on Wednesday night.

“The President is using government to intimidate news outlets that publish stories he doesn’t like,” the Journal wrote. “It’s a low move in a free country with a free press.”

David Ellison, son of the billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, was seen schmoozing near Trump at two different UFC matches earlier this year, stoking speculation that he was leaning on personal relationships to help get the merger approved.

On Wednesday, Paramount pushed back on a New York Post report about a “side deal” between Ellison and Trump involving TV airtime for public service announcements promoting Trump-aligned causes.

“Paramount has no knowledge of any promises or commitments made to President Trump other than those set forth in the settlement proposed by the mediator and accepted by the parties,” the company said.

But the report only intensified questions inside CBS News about how Ellison might approach owning the news division in the future.

While journalists at “60 Minutes” and across CBS News are concerned about the situation, they ultimately want to move on and continue doing their jobs.

“This settlement is not a reflection on the essential and bold work of 60 Minutes of CBS,” Tompkins told CNN. “It is a reflection of a vindictive president and corporate heads who did not value one of the fundamental principles that underpin the ownership of a news organization.”

“That principle,” he said, “is stated as the second tenet of the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics: Act Independently.”

Government employees have long protected the ballot from attacks. The president is preparing to fire many of them.

Per the above article:  “In its crusade against federal agencies, the Trump administration is targeting our election system, making potentially dangerous reductions to protections that help keep elections free, fair, and secure. On Friday, the acting director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency sent a memo to all agency staff notifying them that “all election security activities” would be paused pending the results of an internal investigation. The memo also stated that the administration was cutting off all funds to the Election Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center—a Department of Homeland Security–funded organization that helps state and local officials monitor, analyze, and respond to cyberattacks targeting the nation’s election hardware and software.

The work of CISA and the EI-ISAC has been central to election security in the United States for most of the past decade, providing state and local election officials with critical tools and assistance to defend against cyber and physical threats to election systems. These steps and other recent blows to federal election guardrails were foretold in Project 2025. Understanding the playbook will help us be ready to push back when the next shoes drop.

Changes to CISA began shortly after Kristi Noem was sworn in as secretary of Homeland Security, which oversees the agency. Beyond the announced election security pause and defunding of EI-ISAC, the agency also put critical election security staff on leave and targeted them for potential termination. These staff include CISA’s regional election security advisers, who are former state and local election officials that provide on-the-ground security support to current frontline election workers, and members of the agency’s Election Resilience team, who were reportedly targeted because they had previously been involved with the agency’s efforts to communicate accurate information about election security to election officials and the public.

Although state and local election officials from both sides of the aisle have praised CISA for providing such support, President Donald Trump and several other conservatives have criticized the agency ever since Trump’s first appointee to lead CISA, Christopher Krebs, promoted accurate information about the 2020 election, including that the election was secure. (The president continues to falsely claim that the 2020 election was rigged.)

According to reports, leaders at the Department of Homeland Security will decide next steps for CISA’s election security initiatives when its review is completed March 6. But given the president’s attacks on CISA’s work, it is not difficult to imagine that the administration will permanently gut the agency’s election security role, as recommended in Project 2025.

Even if CISA nominally continues to offer limited election security support, cutting its staff and deprioritizing its work may mean that the nearly 10,000 local election officials on the ground feel very little benefit from the group.

The new administration’s attacks on federal election security assistance extend beyond CISA or the EI-ISAC. Almost immediately after she was sworn in as attorney general, Pam Bondi disbanded the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force—another target of Project 2025. The task force was established during Trump’s first term, following Russian actors’ attempts to interfere in the 2016 election by hacking campaign emails, influencing public opinion through social media, and probing for cybersecurity weak points in voter registration systems. Interference from Russia and other countries continues to threaten American elections. In 2024 bomb threats that appeared to come from Russian email domains were sent to polling locations, videos tied to Russia falsely depicted election workers destroying ballots, and hackers tied to Iran successfully obtained and attempted to leak documents from the Trump campaign. Now a critical line of defense against these attacks is gone.

The Trump administration also took aim earlier this month at the Federal Election Commission, the bipartisan agency that regulates campaign finance in federal elections. Project 2025 called for a weaker FEC, arguing that the independent agency should do less to regulate political spending. In an unprecedented move, Trump tried to fire the commission’s chair. The move came just as the FEC is set to adjudicate campaign finance complaints from the 2024 election, many of which involved billionaire Elon Musk’s contributions to and spending on behalf of the Trump campaign.

Each of these maneuvers weakens the guardrails that have kept American elections secure and fair. And again, they may be just the beginning, given other election-related recommendations in Project 2025.

The plan also further advocates targeting public and private institutions like task forces and university researchers that study election lies and attempt to communicate accurate election information to the public. Project 2025 even suggests weaponizing civil rights laws to go after election officials, voting registration groups, and nonpartisan voter-friendly policies.

Fortunately, the pushback against at least some of these efforts already has a blueprint in the pushback against executive orders targeting other government functions. Dozens of lawsuits have already been filed in response to Trump’s executive orders. Public pressure campaigns also appear to have had some success, with leaders in the Trump administration reversing course on policy decisions like the federal funding freeze. Any efforts by the Trump administration to use the Department of Justice or the Federal Communications Commission—as was suggested by Project 2025—to prevent Americans from voting, or exercising their First Amendment rights to tell the truth about elections, can likewise be fought in courts of law and public opinion”.

Former DHS official Miles Taylor stated Trump was “Incandescently stupid”, that he had to “dumb down” classified memos so Trump could understand them and what he saw firsthand terrified him. Most Americans are unaware that Republicans rigged elections in their favor for years to come through Gerrymandering. In 2009, Republicans injected $30 million, much of it from dark money, often targeting vulnerable blue state Democrats in races that wouldn’t otherwise draw a lot of national funding. This resulted in landslide state wins for Republicans. In 2010, they began hyper-gerrymandering every state they took control of. The plan was called REDMAP

This how Republicans has been able to hold majorities in the House of Representatives and in states which they captured in 2010 and is one of the many unscrupulous tactics they use to hold onto power against the will of the majority of Americans.

When the midterm elections were done, Republicans had gained unilateral control of 11 state legislatures, upping their total to 25. Between then and the 2012 elections, GOP lawmakers in these states had largely undisputed power over redrawing congressional districts. This helped allow Republicans to maintain control of the House, even though Democrats received over 1 million more votes.

The Republican State Leadership Committee issued a memo stating “Controlling the redistricting process in these states would have the greatest impact on determining how both state legislative and congressional district boundaries would be drawn. Drawing new district lines in states with the most redistricting activity presented the opportunity to solidify conservative policy making at the state level and maintain a Republican stronghold in the U.S. House of Representatives for the next decade.”

Republicans have a history of voter suppression, voter purges, voter challenges, Gerrymandering and other unscrupulous anti-democratic tactics to ‘win’ elections.

Through Gerrymandering, Republicans has made it almost impossible to be removed from office in some districts. Since they feel safe from being removed from office, they have no motivation to compromise. They are pursuing radical right wing agendas such as cutting assistance to the poor, cutting planned parenthood funding and passing anti-aborting “War on Women” legislation when the majority of Americans do not support these actions.

Republicans are destroying democracy by Gerrymandering districts. As you can see from the graph above, a disproportionate number of Republicans were “elected” in relation to votes cast.

How The GOP Manipulated Ohio Elections

After winning single-party control of the state in the 2010 elections, Ohio Republicans set out to redraw the state’s congressional map to their advantage. What unfolded is one of the most egregious examples of partisan gerrymandering in modern history. Rather than working through the official legislative process which involved a bipartisan task force, Ohio Republicans and national GOP operatives rented a secret hotel room in Columbus, known as “The Bunker.” They designed a map that would give Republicans a 12-4 advantage over Democrats, when it came to “winning” districts, and therefore, congressional seats. Democrats won 20 million More Votes and Lost

The United States constitution is severely flawed when more often than not in the last few elections the majority of people voting for a particular party did not receive their relative representation. Democrats received 20 million more votes in the Senate than Republicans in 2014, yet Republicans won big.

The same occurred in the House of Representatives in 2012.

House Democrats out-earned their Republican counterparts by 1.17 million votes. Read another way, Democrats won 50.59 percent of the two-party vote. Still, they won just 46.21 percent of seats, leaving the Republicans with 234 seats and Democrats with 201.

Gerrymandering is an assault on Democracy

This is yet another example of how Republicans rig elections… how they don’t give a damn about the will of the American people and how they use unscrupulous tactics to win, regardless of how unethical and despicable the tactics may be.

To Republicans, winning at all costs is a “Zero Sum Game”. They know the only way they can win, is if you lose.

RedShift: How The GOP Rigged Our Elections

Voter Suppression has been a Republican tactic for the last 50 years. Author Thom Hartman reveals one particular effect of their voter suppression, Redshift

Dr Beth Clarkson, a ASQ-Certified Quality Engineer with a PhD in Statistics describes how she discovered in 2008, that elections in the United States were being rigged.

Dr Beth Clarkson, a ASQ-Certified Quality Engineer with a PhD in Statistics found patterns indicative of manipulation in voting machines which goes across multiple states and election cycles to 2010.

“Clarkson, a certified quality engineer with a Ph.D. in statistics, has analyzed election returns in Kansas and elsewhere over several elections that indicate “a statistically significant” pattern where the percentage of Republican votes increase the larger the size of the precinct.

While it is well-recognized that smaller, rural precincts tend to lean Republican, statisticians have been unable to explain the consistent pattern favoring the Republicans that trends upward as the number of votes cast in a precinct or other voting unit goes up. In primaries, the favored candidate appears to always be the Republican establishment candidate, above a tea party challenger. And the upward trend for Republicans occurs once a voting unit reaches roughly 500 votes.

“This is not just an anomaly that occurred in one place,” Clarkson said. “It is a pattern that has occurred repeatedly in elections across the United States. The pattern could be voter fraud or a demographic trend that has not been picked up by extensive polling, she said.

“I do not know why this trend is there, but I know that the pattern is there and one way to establish that it is or is not election fraud is to go and do a physical audit of paper records of voting machines,” she said.

Clarkson became more interested in the issue after reading a paper written by statisticians Francois Choquette and James Johnson in 2012 of the Republican primary results showing strong statistical evidence of election manipulation in Iowa, New Hampshire, Arizona, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, Louisiana, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Kentucky.

Clarkson said she couldn’t believe their findings, so she checked their math and found it was correct and checked their model selection and found it appropriate. And then she pulled additional data from other elections they hadn’t analyzes and found the same pattern”.
